The Baha'i Studies Listserv In the law of Moses, some crimes had theological punishments ie no official state sentencing, while others did. If you broke a commandment, you could be theoretically executed. I say theoretically because the process of conviction under Jewish law is very complicated and porecedural. Also, Jewish history has lots of examples of periods of history of lack of enforcement under bad kings (and a bad queen).

Adam Smith, by the way, is considered the father of capitalist theory. He was a moral philosophy who wrote towards the end of the 18th century. > Tithes were self-imposed as God challenges people to not-tithe and see if it > is better than tiithing. People tithe based on the promise that it > is favorable (not mandatory) in the sight of God. "Are you referring to the passages which talk about the God cursing those who fail to tithe? Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. 3:9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.
