I understand what you are saying but but for most practical purposes,
that's not a distinction which really makes a difference, at least not
to me.

Or to put it differently promoting a more equal society is not an
either/or issue, people lie on a continuum. And someone who believes
that the government should be use to optain redress for those who
suffer unfair treatment is further along on that continuum than
someone who believes that private individuals have an enshrined right
to discriminate against other people.

Try to imagine how  you would respond if someone took Rand Paul's
position when it comes to some other social ill. (theft, murder?)
