I'm coming to this very late and have not read any of the postings. But
this statement caught my attention.
We live in a society that everyone has home mortgage, credit card payments,
car loans, college loans, etc. Very few people, if any, are debt free. Is
it really practical to hold this dated statement of 1932 as a guiding
principle?
Also, very clearly, the "foundation of our economic life" in 2003 does not
rest upon this principle.
It strikes me that statements like this from the Guardian's era are more
for historical studies than actual everyday utilities.
Thanks,
ahang.
