Good to hear that you like it! Could you elaborate on what/why you like
it, and what you don't like about "and that they can progress and evolve
by hacking other AIs"? It would help to move forward and refine it.

Maybe through something like what I described for the missions system:

It helps to give them personality, and to use the interaction to give
goals and missions.

Here are a few actions I listed before, that they could perform:

- Meet/discuss with players in the game (AIs live on websites, so you
encounter them by browsing the web)
- Be captured/befriend and progress/evolve (turn-based minigame or
mission actions)
- Being taken care of (need to perform some actions every day/week to
keep them in shape and prevent them from escaping - for example)
- Breed with other AIs

It could depend on the type of AI. Some could try to survive, some
others would be interested in learning, other would meet other AIs,
others discover who they are/meaning of life, others would conquer the
world... Depending on the personality of the AI, this could give a large
range of possible missions (a bookworm AI born out of a university
website could need to visit resources websites every day to get more
knowledge and keep evolving, while an AI born out of a anarchist website
would want to hack federal agencies websites).
