I suggest that we think long and hard about turning the BASFA mailing
list into a platform for people to argue their political preferences,
religious preferences or to make statements which are misleading,
bigoted or just plain false. It could get real messy, real fast.

A statement was sent to the BASFA list
> My preference is for protecting
> traditional marriage and our freedom of speech to be able to talk about
> traditional marriage and traditional family units.

The statement is not obviously false since it is merely reporting
someone's preference and thus far it appears at least plausible and we
have no evidence to the contrary. However if taken as an argument that
supporting Prop 8 would support those items listed as preferences then
the statement is false. False because Prop 8 has nothing to do with
freedom of speech. It is also misleading because there are multiple
marriage traditions. As for being bigoted we do not have evidence of
that; not everything which is false or misleading is bigoted.

So the question is do we want to keep the BASFA list free of political
statements, religious statements and statements on other topics which
are misleading, bigoted or false?

I rewrote this message many times to try to moderate the display of my
feelings on the issue of Prop 8. However if the decision is made to
turn the BASFA list into a Prop 8 discussion area then I will send out
another message and it might not be as restrained. And I assure you
that those on the Yes on Prop 8 side will not like what I have to say.

Fred
