The problem I see is that Prop 8 will also threaten hetero-marriages, should it pass.
The people who spearheaded the proposition use the argument that marriage is for the purpose of uniting a man and a woman for the purpose of creating a family. If it passes, the state will have to nullify all those marriages that were entered into legally during the summer and fall of this year because you can¹t simultaneously recognize and not recognize something. Once you start to do that, what¹s to then stop the state from nullifying the marriages of those who actively choose not to have children. Maybe, because it seems to be the Christian right spending all the money on this campaign, they¹ll say that a Jew and a Christian should not be allowed to be married. Heck, they may even want to go back to making it illegal for blacks and whites to marry each other. Once one group¹s civil rights are constitutionally denied, what¹s to stop other group¹s rights including your own - from being denied. Prop 8 is not a step forward, but 20 steps back. My preference is for protecting traditional marriage and our freedom of speech to be able to talk about traditional marriage and traditional family units.
