BTW interesting fact: BBEdit = $199, MicroSoft Office (Academic) =
$149.
Unfair comparison.
BBEdit 8.2 Educational : $49
Besides -- BBEdit makes me more productive. MS Office makes me
bash my head against a table, trying to figure out its rules
for what qualifies as something to be included in the table of
contents when I've got a term paper due in less than an hour.
Oh ... and for the originator of this thread:

(and for the record -- yes, I've told people this many, many, times,
however, I've been busy the last couple of weeks with term papers...
damned MS Word -- I really need to learn LaTeX and just get rid of
MS Word)
Now -- let's get to some creative criticism, shall we?
1. I have _way_ more than 3 computers in my home. Most are
servers, and of the DVRs, I've never seen the need to use
the full features of BBEdit to edit files on them. (maybe
if I had a digital TV in the front of the house, but running
computer resolution stuff on an analog TV gives me a headache)
And the digital TV I have ('HDTV ready', I think it said in
the auction -- it's an old 29" monitor like they used in
conference rooms before projectors became widespread) I
use for my game consoles, not a computer.
I have current versions of BBEdit installed on _2_ machines
at home. (both laptops, and which are only both on when I'm
backing up my main laptop to my 'backup' 3+ yr old machine)
2. I manage quite a few systems at work. Again, I only keep
BBEdit installed on _1_ machine there. I edit files via
sftp, and where that doesn't work, I move the files through
other means, make the changes, then push the changes back
out.
I do have TextWrangler installed all over the place, and
I don't think I've never ran into a need for BBEdit over
TextWrangler. (Glossaries, HTML menu ... I'm not sure
what else the differences are)
Oh -- and my work has a multi-user site license, and
we're not at capacity. But I don't see the need for
BBEdit on every machine. For quick changes, I typically
ssh in and use vim.
3. At a past job, where they didn't assign me a Mac, I
brought my own machine, w/ my own copy of BBEdit, moved
files to that machine, edited them, then pushed them
back out. (although, this is a problem at my current
job, as I have to get security to scan a machine before
it's put on the network, which defeats the whole purpose
of having a laptop to take home)
4. Have you ever considered asking nicely, rather than
indirectly saying 'your software sucks' You catch more
flies with honey than vinegar, and all those other sayings.
(You can reference any of my past messages about why
it's a bad idea to be a prick when asking for things)
So -- here's a few suggestions --
a. This is not a pissing contest. You're unhappy.
This is not a valid reason for annoying other members
on this list.
b. Being a zealot about an issue is not conducive to
finding a viable solution.
c. If you were willing to take the time that you spend
in bitching about the software to tell us what you
exact needs are, someone on this list may be able
to give you an alternative.
d. There's a solution that works in this situation, that
worked with Adobe software 10+ years ago. I'm not
sure that I'm in the frame of mind that I want to tell
you what that workaround is, though. If you think
about what the software is doing, I think it's rather
obvious.
Oh -- and I much prefer BBEdit's 'check on startup' to
MS Office's 'check all the time, and when I think there's
something else on the network, because Virtual PC is
flaking out, I'm going to dump you out of the app'.
