It's not that the man pages aren't there, it's just that the man pages seem barely to hint at why these functions are useful and/or important.

Besides reading lots of various web pages with hints (macoxshints.com,
afp548.com, etc.), there are a few books out there that mention some
of the less well documented features in MacOS.  Two that come to
mind are the Mac OS for Unix Geeks series, and the Mac OS X: The
Missing Manual series:

One of them (I can't remember which one, and my books are at work),
has an appendix of man pages for utilities that Apple didn't bother
putting in man pages for.
