552 millibits is a pretty tiny file but. . .
BBEdit seems to want to read an entire file before displaying
anything. It helps to make life easier for BBEdit by turning off
things like wrap text. I really don't know what else might matter
but line numbering and, now, function collapsing come to mind.

thank you for the idea -- I tried it, turning every option off within
BBEdit, flushed RAM with a restart so that BBEdit was the only
footprint in the RAM stack, and still no dice. millibit = :)
