It's been my experience over the years that when trying to work with files over a certain, relatively small, size, BBEdit gets a bit too painful. The specific size has grown as hardware gets more powerful, but on my G4/1.4 with 1.25 GB RAM, things start to get painful at a few tens of MB; my similarly equipped PB is about the same. Once the file opens, everything is usually just fine, but opening the file takes so long that it's usually quicker just to do the job in Terminal using the various Unix utilities. Needless to say, I often find myself reaching for the force-quit key combo when I accidentally open on a very large text file in the Finder that gets sent to BBEdit. Making the situation worse is that BBEdit completely locks up during the process, keeping me from doing anything productive in already-open files (or saving them before doing that force-quit).
As a result of this, I've never regarded BBEdit as a viable tool for editing large files, except in a pinch. I cringe at the thought of editing a 70 MB file, yet alone a 700 MB one. But from the sound of this thread, others edit large files without a problem. Have I in fact been experiencing some sort of weird issue that's hung with me for all these years across multiple machines and several major updates of both OS and BBEdit?
