Because of a limitation in the OS, the largest file size we can currently read is 768M when represented as Unicode. Note the qualification; since BBEdit represents files internally as Unicode, a character takes up two bytes, so today's practical limit is 384M on disk (since that'll expand to 768M when represented as Unicode). Working around the limitation is on our to-do list.

It's been my experience over the years that when trying to work with files over a certain, relatively small, size, BBEdit gets a bit too painful. The specific size has grown as hardware gets more powerful, but on my G4/1.4 with 1.25 GB RAM, things start to get painful at a few tens of MB;

I used to edit a ~30MB file on my G4 500Mhz machine with BBEdit regularly and never had a problem, unless of course I was silly enough to turn on wrap, then it all went pear shaped and dropped to treacle-in-orbit speeds.

my similarly equipped PB is about the same. Once the file opens, everything is usually just fine, but opening the file takes so long that it's usually quicker just to do the job in Terminal using the various Unix utilities. Needless to say, I often find myself reaching for the force-quit key combo when I accidentally open on a very large text file in the Finder that gets sent to BBEdit. Making the situation worse is that BBEdit completely locks up during the process, keeping me from doing anything productive in already-open files (or saving them before doing that force-quit).

OK, well, yes, OPENING the file takes time, that's true. And yes, [n] vi is faster. But working with a 30MB file in BBEdit is sill usually better than working with the same file in nvi, unless it's a very minor and quick edit/fix simply because it's overall a better tool.

As a result of this, I've never regarded BBEdit as a viable tool for editing large files, except in a pinch. I cringe at the thought of editing a 70 MB file,

Well, to be fair, editing a 70MB file is slow regardless of editor choice and yes, I've even had nvi slow down and become unresponsive with massively large files, especially if they contain any binary characters.

Oh and I could be a genius
if I just put my mind to it
And I, I could do anything
if only I could get 'round to it.
