If you still have a machine that runs classic OS 9 or less - like this 8500 that I still love - you can use Apple's MPW shell to edit large files. MPW was written when 8 MB was a LOT of RAM and it still retains its ability to "window" the file for editing while remaining most of the text on disk only. That was a common technique in the days of dumb terminals and a shared DEC box. MPW handles large log files pretty well and you can script editing commands on one window that can be applied to another which is designated as a target. The ENTER key is used as in a BBEdit worksheet. And one no longer has to pay for MPW. It's downloadable from Apple.com. ********* Something else I have tried with some success on large apache log files is to use substitute commands, line by line, in a perl script to replace very common strings, such as the first parts for a path name, with a couple of unique 7 bit ASCII characters. A few substitutes carefully chosen can reduce file size to 25%. Think of it as intelligent use of LZW compression. After editing in BBEdit the file can be re-expanded in perl but whit happens is that I remember the substitutions and they just stay that way. -- --> Marriage and kilo are troubled words.
