--------- the developers aren't going to tack a full-scale file-system-manager onto their text-editor. ---------
It's not a tack-on. It's addressing a hole. As-is, BBedit auto-saves unsaved docs....to an obscure folder, not easily discovered or searched (Spotlight doesn't see it, I don't believe). That's a kludge of a solution (though a very welcome one that's saved my ass a bunch). All I'm saying is that it ought to do so more powerfully: bring those unsaved docs fully into the fold. Let us handle metadata WITHIN the app. Anyone who considers metadata a ditzy b.s. realm not befitting their workhorse text editor is hopelessly stuck in the past, IMO. And it's not as if BBedit refuses to get involved in higher level views of docs and doc groups...e.g. Projects. Crusty System 7 dudes from the 90's (like myself! no insult intended!) would be expected to be completely satisfied relying on Finder for metadata and file management. But crusty System 7 dudes are not a renewable resource. And BBedit's already inexorably begun this march. It's just stalled, it seems. What do I want out of this thread? Reread my OP. Workarounds! Copy/Pasting into/out of Yojimbo/Evernote won't solve the problem, for reasons I mentioned (thanks for the suggestion, though). Anything else? Any non-crusties who've even partially solved this problem without saving every single nascent scratchy, tenuous, in-progress doc to disk, and praying Spotlight can retrieve it later? Finally, if my observations irritate you, and you have no useful advice for me, my suggestion would be that you more carefully choose which threads you read. Just as your needs from this app aren't the only conceivable needs, your needs from this list aren't the only ones. The app has a large user pool. -- This is the BBEdit Talk public discussion group.
