This talk about tapes for ransom is very interesting, and the behaviour
of the storage company seems pretty reasonable to me. Definitely a PHB
problem here.

It reminds me of something I saw happening a couple of years ago: a
certain milk factory^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hhosting facility was holding
equipment of non-paying customers hostage until the bills were paid. It
was kinda funny walking through the data center. Half of the cages were
to protect company's gear, the other half were detention cells.

In just about every case where I knew any of the details, there were
outrageous SLA failings on the provider's part, and a hell of a good
reason for payment to have been withheld. I don't know how any of those
problems were resolved, except for one, where the gear was rescued
(stolen?) by the victim company's employees tunneling under the raised
floor with their gear :-)

The hosting company folded up only a short time later.
