Last year I did a mass shrinking of every old course volume to just-big-enough, to recover a ton of space. You just have to be sure to veritas fsck and shrink the file system before shrinking the underlying volume :-)

Off the top of my head, I think you can shrink VxFS filesystems, but you can't do that on UFS. I could be wrong, though.
