Gerald suggested that you wouldn't reach the economies of scale that allow CircuitCo to sell the BBB for $45, but the price is going up anyway, so maybe it'd work for you. If the changes you made are feasible, and don't affect compatibility, since you're adding functionality, not changing it, maybe it'd be easier to get your changes into the 'upstream'.
