When you start typing a name, a lookup option is listed. So if I am in a to field, and type smi there's a Lookup: smi option. Clicking that will bring up all the options in the GAL. Note that it doesn't necessarily just bring up smiths. Smi for me brings up a user S. Miles. along with the Smiths. Nothing has to be loaded on the device for this to work.

Let me see if I understand; the user types in a name, John Smith, that is in the Global Address List, but not in his personal contacts, it performs an immediate lookup on the GAL and resolve the address.
