Lookup is not automatic. If the name is in your Contacts it will show up as an available address to choose. If the name isn't there, press the BlackBerry button and select Lookup. The BlackBerry searches the GAL for what was entered, then gives you a list to select from if there's more than one. You can also Add that person to your Contacts from here or from the Contacts/Address Book icon.
I personally prefer the iPhone's auto-lookup feature. I hope that we'll see auto-lookup in the future. Let me see if I understand; the user types in a name, John Smith, that is in the Global Address List, but not in his personal contacts, it performs an immediate lookup on the GAL and resolve the address.
