Only the phase process link I provided does 4.1 to 5.0, but it still doesn't require the Transport Tool! You still have to use move user, but by using the BAS instead of the Transporter Tool.
The second article for knife-edge, you are correct. It clearly states in Task 6 to install the same version only. I missed that nugget. Their upgrade guide does not provide any knife-edge cutover steps.
