Sorry, I cannot confirm that. I did two more clean installs
and each time the LAF was not Mac - but I could correct it
by fiddling with edit>>configure... finally reducing it to:

iMg5:/usr/local/lib jkt$ rm -fr j601 ; mkdir j601 ; tar -xzf j601ubeta_darwin.tar.gz

but, no joy, it doesn't LAF like a Mac application and the
box in edit>>configure... is blank (but changes OK).

The default LAF in edit|config shows as blank (it shouldn't and I don't understand why it does and we will fix that), however the LAF is in fact set to Mac (at least on my machine). The key indication of the Mac LAF is that form menus are at the top of the screen and not on the form.

Please confirm that with a clean install you have the Mac LAF and that there is no need to fiddle with edit|configure.

OK - did the following:

iMg5:/usr/local/lib jkt$ rm -rf j601
iMg5:/usr/local/lib jkt$ mkdir j601
iMg5:/usr/local/lib jkt$ tar -xzf j601ubeta_darwin.tar.gz
iMg5:/usr/local/lib jkt$ cd j601
iMg5:/usr/local/lib/j601 jkt$ sudo mv libj601.dylib /usr/lib/.
Password:
iMg5:/usr/local/lib/j601 jkt$

Bad News / Good News

The default LAF is blank. Actually, I noticed this yesterday
but forgot to report it. If I change it to Mac OS X, quit,
restart - things are OK (but I get the intro screen I had
previously said to forget) but if I click on "Set Defaults"
the LAF becomes empty...

Good news is that the browser link for help works as it should
(and did - don't know what I did to break that...)

Mac LAF is the default from ubeta onward. And old setting in a config file might be hitting you. Delete your old J directory (setting aside any important stuff), do a clean ubeta install, and you should get the Mac laf by default.

Oleg,

I thought I had changed it, but I hadn't gotten past
an error that put me off. This time around, I succeeded
and like the appearance much better.

Eric, wouldn't it make sense to have Mac OS X as the
default appearance for Mac OS X installs??

But now (and maybe this is unrelated and just something
new in ubeta) clicking on Help doesn't launch a browser
as it used to.... Also I notice a finger action that
further confounds me - the various key shortcuts such
as <cmd><shift>n to get NB. inserted in the session cause
it to be displayed as selected text, so any normal key
causes it to be replaced by that key value. Furthermore
if I hit a right arrow to deselect the NB. control moves
to the next line of the input area. This is all part of
(what I consider) the strange behaviors of ijx panes
in the Mac version.

Anyway, thanks again for your insights and persistence.

No, it's not. The whole J menu is in the top system menu bar.

Have you selected "Mac OS X" for Look and Feel under
Java Settings in Configure dialog?

In J's case, the only thing on that bar is the Apple and the
