OK - I was being blind and boneheaded ... What I did was copy 
jhs_default.ijs to

    ~addons/ide/jhs/jhs.ijs

rather than (what was clearly stated) to -

    ~addons/ide/jhs/config/jhs.ijs


SORRY for all the noise, it now works the same as when I edited the 
default file. Why I decided that I was supposed to copy it down a 
level is a mystery to me...
