I think this is most likely.  For now, maybe I'll try playing with GTK IDE
under a Win32 VM, just to get the hang of it & report any issues I find.  

Chris, do you have a 64-bit Windows machine to test on?  I imagine a good
number of J users will have 64-bit Windows machines, and the proportion will
only increase over time.

Doubtful, as I did that before I downloaded or installed any Addons or GTK
binaries.  But for completeness I will try it again without the moving
about.

That's not quite the same, as a Custom install is for a single user, not
multiple users (at least according to the installer's prompt). 

What I want is for J to be installed in Program Files, and for each user to
have his own ~user directory under %USERPROFILE% .  This is standard
architecture on Windows.

Yep, that's what I was suggesting (you don't need to update profile.ijs btw,
just config/folders.cfg).

Yes, it very much would.  In fact, I'd suggest the installer run "install
and update all JAL addons", then create shortcuts for GTK IDE and JHS (in
that order).
