Doesn't it already do this by storing an album artist in albums.contributor 
(albeit if there are more than one, it would need to find the album artists via 
the contributor_album link table where the role is 5 for album artist).

No it's not a performance issue, and it could be optimised further anyway if it 
were.  I think the more album artist or compilation tags that are present, the 
less work it has to do to automatically determine (i.e. it just does the ones 
where it hasn't been manually set).
