Yes it does exactly this, I was just trying to say that maybe we
shouldn't call it "compilation album detection" because the important
stuff is really that it automatically sets "Various Artists" as the
ALBUMARTIST if there isn't an ALBUMARTIST tag an an album that contains
multiple artist. The fact that it also sets albums.compilation=1 is just
a plus.
The main reason to have this logic is to avoid the need to have
ALBUMARTIST tags in your compilation albums.
Unless I've missed something, SBS "Artists" menu is exactly the same as
the "Album Artists" menu in other applications, at least if you have
ALBUMARTIST tags in all your music. If you don't have ALBUMARTIST tags,
SBS "Artists" menu probably behaves better than the "Album Artists" menu
in other applications
.
The issue is really that you can't simultaneously get both:
- A menu that displays all album artists
AND
- A menu that displays all artists (also those that only participates
on compilation albums).
You can get these menus but not simultaneously, you have to choose
which one you want by changing a setting. The setting can't be change
directly in the Squeezebox interface, you have to get a computer and
launch the web interface, so it's not easy to switch between them.
As I look at it, providing two menus instead of one would be a plus,
the only negative side effect I can see is that it might clutter the
user interface a little bit for users that only want one menu. However,
on the Squeezebox interfaces users that only want one of the menus can
just hide the one they don't want to see.
My suggestion is that:
- "Group compilation albums" is hard coded to be activated
- "Artists" menu remains unchanged
- We add a new "All Artists" menu that have the same content as
"Artists" have today when you have disabled the "Group compilation
albums" setting.
It is possible to do this as a third party plugin but it requires a bit
of work because the SBS browsing code can't be parametrized today it
would require you to duplicate the whole artists menu code in the
plugin.
Then again, if there isn't a big interest from non advanced users, you
can already accomplish this with the Custom Browse plugin, it's just a
bit more advanced to setup.
