This is the advantage with the current solution, you get shallow menus
with the disadvantage of having to change settings to change behavior.
I think The "Genres" menu probably would need an extra intermediate
level unless you want to hard code it to either show "All Artists" or
"Album Artists" after you have selected a genre.
I think the issue only exists in the top level artist menu and in the
genres menus. I other places where artists are listed it's probably
fine to hard code it to show album artists or all artists dependent on
the context.
An alternative would be to have the "All Artists" menu as a sub menu to
the "Artists" menu and let the "Artists" menu only show album artists
and to show all artists you need to browse into the "All Artists" sub
menu. However, I'm not sure if this is any better than the current
solution.
I suspect the current solution works good for everyone that mostly have
normal albums and fewer compilation albums. For people that have a lot
of compilation albums the list of albums under "Various Artists" is
going to get pretty long and in this case it would probably be a good
idea to select an individual artist to find the correct compilation
album. These users probably deactivate the "Group compilation albums"
option to be able to see and select individual artists directly in the
top level artists menu.
