I disagree. In LMS, an album is either:

a) detected as a compilation, has no AA tagging, so the album artist is
the VA
b) detected as a compilation, has AA tagging, so the album artist is as
given in the AA tagging
c) not a compilation and has AA tagging, so the album artist is as given
in the AA tagging
d) none of the above

In d) all artists on all tracks in the album _must_ be the same. There's
no other alternative. It could be a single artist (as will be the case
the vast majority of the time) or it could multiple artists. All the
same. In this case, the album artist is, quite simply, the same as the
artists on any single track. Using the contributor column in the albums
table (which could be eliminated) is a hack, and fails in the same way
that if fails now when displaying the artist for albums in browse
lists.

It's not a matter of "trying to be smart", which you imply is trying to
interpret the data as something that it may not be. It's a matter of
trying understand the data you're working with.
