Guys - you're killing me. Even though some of you denied my claim that there's too much discussion for what you think is a simple topic, you continue to write like you'd have to re-word a bible :-). Only a few hours of sleep, and I'm confronted with too many postings on the topic again... I should have stuck with what I said earlier: please provide a "single-page" description of what you want and all agree with. But today I'm going to add my share.

I'm really trying hard to understand what this thread used to be about, where it's going, what we're discussing here, where I was wrong and what I should be doing. But it's not easy. "I'm just a soul who's intentions are good. Oh Lord! Please don't let me be misunderstood...".

After going back to the very first initial posting (which already consisted of several postings...) here's what I understand this thread tries to achieve (and yes, this partly is what BJW summarized elsewhere):

- we want an AA only browse mode
- non VA albums without explicit AA tag set should still show up with their Artist value.
- the Artist browse mode should be changed to include artists of all roles
- we want some more specialized browse modes based on roles like eg. Composers as a plus

Where I'm confused is how different is the suggested AA mode from today's Artist mode less the VA object?

(this is not addressed at Erland, it's just the first posting today I'm trying to answer. But here we go anyway:)

I disagree. In LMS, an album is either:

a) detected as a compilation, has no AA tagging, so the album artist
is
the VA
b) detected as a compilation, has AA tagging, so the album artist is
as
given in the AA tagging
c) not a compilation and has AA tagging, so the album artist is as
given
in the AA tagging
d) none of the above

Quick Q.: is this your understanding of how LMS _does_ work, or how it
_should_ work?

I don't think "a)" is implemented in the database/scanner at the moment,
at least it wasn't in my setup when I tried earlier in the thread.
The others should already work like above unless I'm misinterpreting
something.

I wonder if we really want "a)" to be handled in the scanner, the result
would be that we again get a "My Albums/Albums Artists/Various Artists"
entry which some people probably doesn't want because they want "My
Albums/Albums Artists" to be restricted to content explicitly tagged
with ALBUMARTIST tags.

IMHO a.) is correct if "Group compilation albums together" is enabled. But we don't don't set a role of AA in the roles tables. It's where the albums.contributor comes into play an is set to the VA artist ID.

But there still is a lot of extra code to make that item show up in albums lists. If you look at my latest changes in that branch I've been tinkering with, then you'll see that it's relatively easy to exclude it from a pure AA only query.
