Niels is right. It's always been clear that BibTeX uses "and" as a delimiter
between names. But TeX puts an "and"
between the two last names in a list of names in the references of the actual
output pdf or dvi file. Babel
translates this last "and" for the appropriate word in the designated language
("und" in German, "et" in French,
"ve" in Turkish, "y" in Spanish and so on). But it so happens that in Spanish
when the word coming right after
"y" begins with an "i", you have to use "e" instead of "y".
I use the Natbib package and have prepared my own bst file with makebst. I have
copiously modified my bst
file since to suit the specific editorial policies of the academic institution
for which I work. However, I would
like this bst file to have a kind of conditional subscript (perhaps in the
format.names function?) to put the right
word (either "y" or "e") every time without me having to manually edit the bbl
file after running BibTeX.
Unfortunately, Niels might be right that writing this conditional subscript
could be far too complicated and
make it preferable to continue manually editing the bbl file after each time I
run BibTeX.
