As many of us know, the intersection of Eastwood & Division is also
dangerous for those traveling inbound as drivers doing a right-on-red
maneuver often don't bother to look right before proceeding- a common
pedestrian issue. On Friday morning at around 7:30 I approached this light
as the Division St. signal was turning red. A pickup truck raced through the
yellow/red light and I thought the car behind would follow, but the driver
came to a quick, but soon-to-become apparent, very brief stop. As I
proceeded through the intersection the car began to make a right turn
narrowly missing me. The bicyclist behind me was not so lucky and was
knocked off his bicycle before the driver stopped. He was already trying to
walk off the injury to his knee by the time I turned around. Unfortunately
none of those of us the witnessed the crash had a cell phone and the rider
who was hit just wanted to get the drivers contact information and move on.

I think it is very important that the police are involved in any crash for a
several reasons; the first being that if the rider had more serious injuries
that developed later the driver couldn't effectively deny that the accident
happened. Also, it would have been a good little public awareness exhibit
for other drivers to pass the scene and try to put 2 and 2 together as to
how the accident happened and maybe encourage them to think about their own
driving habits.

Ride like the drivers are trying to run you down- don't give them the
chance.

Steve
