While I certainly occur that education is important, no amount of
education will stop accidents from happening at this intersection
without modifications to the intersection--because there will always
be new bicyclists to be educated and there will always be new drivers
going through that intersection for the first time.
Of course it's predictable that drivers will not look east for
oncoming cyclists, because drivers are only looking west down the 1-
way street. But it usually takes a near collision to make cyclists
and drivers aware of the danger.
What is needed are warning signs of some kind posted on Division St.
or flashing yellow lights or something to alert drivers to cyclists
crossing in the path (from both directions).

This kind of crash is completely common when we build "sidepaths".
It is
one of the downsides to this type of path. There may be ways to
improve
this particular intersection but it is best of we bikers educate other
bikers of the danger. Every time a side path crosses and
intersection or
driveway, the danger of cars turning exists. Lesson learned, expect
the
worse from drivers.

Subject: Re: [Bikies] cyclist hit
This intersection always makes me nervous; whenever I go that way, I
wonder if I'm going to get hit by a right-turning vehicle on Eastwood
Drive -- and that's what happened to someone else on Friday.
Nothing excuses the truck-driver's actions, of course, but I have
to ask
if the design of the path -- and the intersection in particular -- is
part of the problem. I really like that path, but I know there's a
traffic engineering principle that it's not a good idea to put a
two-way
separated bike path next to a busy street.
This path is a fait accompli, and a nice one at that; but is there
a way
to modify the Division Street intersection to make this sort of
incident
less likely?
