Ditto the studs. Once you're over the sticker shock, esp. if your winter beater is a "generic" 700C hybrid or 26" MTB, hit the Bike Swap in January (or a St. Vinnie's bike sale, or what have you) and get an extra cheap beater set of built wheels with compatible rear cogs. Put your "combo" tires on one set and your studdies on the other. As the weather changes, just switch out whole wheelsets, rather than prying tires off, or running your studs on dry pavement.
