Troy,

I've been riding through the winters in Madison for over a decade. Throughout
the years I've done it on a road bike, mountain bike, fixed gear, you name it
(haven't tried a trike, recumbent, or tandem).

For the past 2 winters I have put studded tires on my fixed gear (but I would
put them on ANY winter commuter I ended up riding) and there is no going back.
Studded tires are a bit of an investment ($150+ for a decent set), but the
return in performance more than makes up for the cost. It is like having the
road back during the icy/snowy wintry months. I'm going to stick them on this
weekend and will take them off sometime in March or April. A decent set of
studded tires should last several seasons.

That's my 2 cents.
