For the past 2 winters I have put studded tires on my fixed gear (but I would put them on ANY winter commuter I ended up riding) and there is no going back. Studded tires are a bit of an investment ($150+ for a decent set), but the return in performance more than makes up for the cost.
I'll second the studs. Not only is the performance remarkable, I can attest that the Nokian brand tires are extremely durable and an excellent value. Most shops seem to have the Nokian Hakkapelitta and Mount & Ground tires for around $60 each. My last pair lasted me 8 winters, that's $15 a winter for the pair.
Just a couple weeks ago I gave them away because I was concerned about cracks in the sidewalls. They probably would have lasted even longer if I didn't park my bike outside in the intense sun for 3 years while I was living at high elevation (UV light breaks down tire rubber).
