I got studs for my bad weather commuter last year, but usually the ride in is
partly snowy/icy and partly dry, so I've been reluctant to use them out of
concern that the studs will 1) wear down on the dry parts, and 2) mess up the
pavements there. I can see the studs wore down a little just in the two months
I used them; I don't have any empirical evidence on the pavements, but you'd
think studs would wear them out. But am I overthinking this?

Eric

Ditto the studs. Once you're over the sticker shock, esp. if your winter beater
is a "generic" 700C hybrid or 26" MTB, hit the Bike Swap in January (or a St.
Vinnie's bike sale, or what have you) and get an extra cheap beater set of
built wheels with compatible rear cogs. Put your "combo" tires on one set and
your studdies on the other. As the weather changes, just switch out whole
wheelsets, rather than prying tires off, or running your studs on dry pavement.
