Eric,

I don't think that the you+your bike+gear weight with studs is enough to make 
an appreciable amount of wear & tear on the roads (any more than biking with 
non-studded tires).  And if it does, it's better than spilling in front of a 
car and making an impact on your head or rear :).  Since you pay the same taxes 
that car drivers and bus riders do you are allowed to use the roads too (I know 
that doesn't give you license to tear them up, but I've never seen any evidence 
that this happens).

I have cheaper Kenda Klondike studded tires and they have not worn out yet 
after 2 seasons of nearly daily weekday commuting on ice/snow/pavement/sandy 
pavement.  I've heard that the hardened metal of the Nokian tips last even 
longer and if you spring for studded tires with replaceable studs you should be 
golden.
