Jack: Sorry a few days after the fact, but here is my response to the poll:

As a bus rider, bicycle commuter, auto driver, and pedestrian and living
within ½ block of a bus stop (Route #6 near west side):

1. Get rid of the annoying beeping with the turn signal is on.

2. Turn off the annoying beeping whenever the bus’ hydraulic height
adjustment is in progress.

3. If practical, eliminate or mute the air brake automatic pressure
relief valve bang.

I find the actual loudness of the above noises to cause Ear PAIN when I’m
next to a bus. A study of crash avoidance effectiveness and environmental
consequences of these noise sources should have been done (must be done) to
inform decision makers.

Subject: [Bikies] poll on Madison Metro turn signals

Hello:

I am a boardmember with the Marquette Neighborhood Association and we have
been approached by area residents with a request to ask Madison Metro to
curb the usage of the turn signals on most, if not all, city buses. In the
very initial start up of that conversation a cyclist wrote to our
neighborhood listserv asking that we not do this because of the added safety
benefits of that system. This caught my attention and I'd like to know what
other cyclists think before I have the opportunity to vote on approaching
Metro. If you could only choose 'yes' to keeping the turn signal sound or
'no' to eliminating it which would you choose and why? Also, if you argue
that it is not a concern either way I would also like to hear from you.
Thank You- Jack Kear
