This is the main argument against sidepaths (essentially wide sidewalks)
and the main argument for one-way protected bike lanes with appropriate
design elements at driveways and intersections.

I think this is why you see some people on bikes preferring on-street lanes
(even if they're unprotected) over sidepaths and has led to what I think
is an awkward design compromise of a sidepath + unprotected on-street lanes
(University Ave, and coming soon Pleasant View). There's an imaginary
distinction that's been internalized by designers that there are confident
cyclists who want to be exposed to high-speed, high-volume traffic in order
to save a second on their commute and cautious cyclists who want to be as
far away from MVs as possible and don't mind taking a lot of extra time. I
would argue that designing high quality, one-way, protected bike lanes
would best meet the needs and preferences of all people on bikes 8-80.
