OK, I looked at the changelog and created bug 1580 to update to
ntp-stable-4.2.0a-20050816.tar.gz

I'm a little uncomfortable with using a transient version like this in
the book, but it is necessary for gcc4 compatability. Looking at the
changes I see an awful lot of changes of less than 5 lines. The gcc4
fixes are:

  1.1194 05/07/19 21:20:36 [EMAIL PROTECTED] +4 -0
[Bug 466] Fix compilation under gcc4

  include/ntpd.h
    1.67 05/07/19 21:20:02 [EMAIL PROTECTED] +0 -2
[Bug 466] Fix compilation under gcc4

  include/ntp_stdlib.h
    1.21 05/07/19 21:20:01 [EMAIL PROTECTED] +0 -4
[Bug 466] Fix compilation under gcc4

  include/ntp_refclock.h
    1.16 05/07/19 21:20:01 [EMAIL PROTECTED] +1 -0
[Bug 466] Fix compilation under gcc4

  include/ntp_control.h
    1.26 05/07/19 21:20:00 [EMAIL PROTECTED] +1 -0
[Bug 466] Fix compilation under gcc4

There are a lot of other fixes that just don't apply to us, but overall,
I see no alternative to the transient version right now.
