AFAICS, the only likely difference using clang is that the build is
considerably smaller. Worth doing for future builds on llvm-6+ now
that it again works, but not worth retesting.
For the elf hack, I'm in the dark about why it is needed.

I've just completed the build and install on my i7 haswell BLFS-8,2,
using the shipped icu. 19.3 SBU (only 8 cores).
Summary:
1. Drop system icu unless that is 61 or 62.
2. Enable clang if its major version is 6 or 7.
3. I need to check how to enable gold.
4. I need to look at fedora to see if I can find out why they
disable elfhack.
