Not sure how big different brands are, but my external USB attached 250Gb drive is around the size of a CD-Rom drive if that means anything to you. Unfortunately I don't know the brand, but I'm here in South Africa, so it's most likely something they might have put together locally.
I'd guess around 20cm x 5cm x 40cm, and it stands on it's stand for cooling purposes, but it's not really in the way as such.
