People should be aware that Upgrading is not a risk free process. I learnt my lesson a couple of years ago. I had a PC which worked absolutely fine on XP sp1 but as soon as I installed sp2 it started crashing. I did a complete restore and it worked fine on sp 1 again .
Unfortunately I bought a web cam for my son and the installation insisted on sp2, if I had known the hassle it would cause I would have tossed it straight in the bin and done without it. Inevitably the PC started crashing as soon as I upgraded to sp2 again. I am fully aware that loads of PCs will be stable with sp 2. Indeed my new PC is. but as pcs are varied and complex things there is always a risk of engendering instability when you upgrade . I spoke to a computer technician recently and he freely admitted he made a good living out of trying to untangle these kinds of messes caused by people trying various upgrades. My new PC has been happily stable on XP sp 2 for a year now. I am not about to risk returning to all the hassles and problems of the past in search of dubious benefits of upgrade. I have turned Windows Update off and I am going nowhere near sp3. I know there are supposed to be security issues but rely on security software to provide protection. My own advice now is if it is not broken then do not fix it. In other words if you want a computer without hassle then put the minimum you need on it. If you do not mind the hassle and I know that some enjoy the challenge of fixing configuration problems then by all means upgrade away. Problem is she can't get the laptop sorted until she goes home in July, so it's a good job her computer shuts off in the first place!
