I'm confused. Alter Aeon does most certainly support MSP. What do you
mean that it wasn't implemented?
If you're saying it wasn't implemented until after mushZ came out, I
can't comment on that, since I have no idea when mushZ came out, or when
alter aeon installed the sounds used for MSP, but for me at least, i
find the MSP sounds to be quite amazing. No, there's no panning,
because MSP doesn't support that, but I don't recall any panning when I
used mushZ briefly to see what all the hype was about either. The MSP
sounds are all high quality, and they cover quite a wide range of
activities, (way more than mushZ handles). To be honest, I found the
mushZ sounds to be repetetive and boring, but that could just be me of
course, I'm not saying MSP is for everyone, and I'm not saying mushZ is
for everyone, but I am saying, they're two completely different
experiences, and I for one don't believe they can be compared on an
equal footing, because they're so vastly different.

Yes, the protocol existed before Mush-Z. That was never up for debate. Msp
was not implemented on Alter Aeon, however, and that was my point.
The built-in sounds have a huge amount of variety, but having tried them
out, I found they couldn't provide the depth or amount of detail that mush-z
does, especially given the lack of stereo panning.
You could build something using the MSP sounds, for sure. I'm skeptical
however if it'll be able to match mush-z for ability to convey meaningful
information in an auditory fashion, at least without any additional external
sounds.
Can you provide some info on what specifically you found better than mush-z?
That might help the developers bring what you enjoyed about MSP to Mush-Z.

I'm pretty sure MSP was out way before mushZ existed. It's been around
for many years, mushZ has too, but I'd be willing to wager MSP existed
before mushZ.
Doing a quick search on the MSP protocol, I find the documentation
explaining how it works, and at the end of the file, it says it was last
updated on July 25 2001. That would indicate that it existed even
before that, and I'd be willing to bet that mushZ didn't exist in 2001,
so no, msp did not exist after mushz, it's the other way around.
But, just for reference, if anyone has the opportunity to use the Mud
Sound Protocol on alter aeon, you should definitely use it, it's
absolutely amazing, and the soundpacks for mushZ pale in comparison in
my opinion.

Sound quality and distinguishability, in many cases.
Consider, for example, the MSP combat sounds. It would be impossible to
use
those to determine damage type being dealt, especially in high-intensity
situations.
There are certainly a few MSP sounds suitable for inclusion in Mush-z.
However, you need a very different set of standards when building
something
that's entirely sound based, as opposed to having sound as an add-on
capability. Mush-z builds a world in sound. Msp is a nice feature in an
existing one built of text.
Also, MSP came after Mush-z, as far as I know.

But, alter aeon supports the mud sounc protocl, so I don't understand
why mushz fiddles around with sound packs, just download the sounds from
the mud itself, that's what they're for. I did notice that muzhZ doesn't
play the sounds alteraeon has in their MSP support, and I was puzzled as
to why this was. There's actually no need for it, alteraeon has a
complete set of sounds you can get quite nicely from the Mud Sound
Protocol, so bringing in sounds from other sources is just plain silly.

@travis, not all mud SOUNDPACKS work by msp, actually comparatively
few of them do, only classic six dragons and materiamagica I believe.
A lot of muds with pre build soundpacks make those soundpacks for!
specific clients, by having a set of scripts for the client along with
sounds that can be downloaded. the scripts then essentially command
the client to play a sound everytime some text is sent from the mud
server.
This is how mushZ for alteraeon works. this isn't a criticism, mushZ
is an awesome piece of work, but equally its why MushZ won't work with
any other client but mushclient, why it needs auto updating through
the client rather than through the mud itself or the alteraeon
website, and why updates to the client often are made after updates to
the game, EG if a new spell or ability is introduced it usually takes
a while before it gets a sound.
This is also why most of the sounds and music in MushZ actually come
from other games and different places.
All the best,
Dark.
