Hi Thomas, I understand where you are coming from for star wars. But when you really take a look at it, George Lucas got his ideas from Japanese animei and old world war II dogfight footage. He has said this himself, stealing the name Jedi from a japanese show he had watched over in japan. In addition, where does the word Stormtrooper come from? His ideas are not original in concept, just original in his particular focus. With that said, I think enough diffrences can be applied to make it happen.
For example The Jedi and sith could be replaced with a futuristic knighthood that resembles more of the arthurian legends. Instead of shining armor, these knights or palidens could have power armor or force fields, give them psionic powers or even magic to perform certain powers that could replicate certain things without stepping on any toes. Such rebellious knights could splinter off and form their own evil league and there you have it. There is no copyright license on a sword made of plasma, or out of electricity. I have seen comics and movies and tv shows and even stephen king use the light saber without ever saying "this is a lightsaber" I wouldn't give up on it. just because George Lucas thinks he can own imagination doesnt mean he is right. I remember a long time ago when TSR the previous owners of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons went on the warpath sueing anyone they could for any content that might contain their "work". This was back in the eighties and they were getting uptight about other role playing games using words such as "strength" or "elf" . In the end, it was ridiculous and they were rightfully shut down from this position. TSR did not own those words or concepts and neither does George Lucas own the words and concept of sword, robot, telekinesis or knight. allan The truth will set you free...
