According to the docs I have, yes James was going to try to let you switch
perspectives, but basically what this did is changed the keys you used and
the whole feel of the game, at least that is what I gather from what he
wrote.  I agree this would be an interesting option to have available.  If
you can do that while maintaining the ability to have the other perspective
available for us purists that is fantastic.

That makes sense. At any rate the game is still a side scroller, but 
merely changes how the audio is played back on speakers and head phones. I
believe James North was going to do something similar with 
multi-perspective play. So I am in some way trying to keep the original 
concept alive.
