Hi,
It would be interesting to know what the original game makers story was 
for Montezuma's Revenge. Although, i don't think realism was a goal. 
Most of it was just fun and an adventure.
Which is fine for fantacy I suppose. Your ideas of other explorers 
leaving things behind is at very least possible.
Btw. i tried your ladder sounds and they are interesting. I trimmed them 
down to resemble steps, and they work although a bit strange the way I 
had to cut them. However it does sound to me a bit like a ladder.
