Hi Thomas, I think having both metal and wood ladders is realistic since, 1. Explorers could have brought in the metal ladders before. 2. You could have your character carry a ladder at the beginning. When you hear a wind sound that would indicate an opening above, she could put the ladder down to climb it, but leave it there. 3. She could also carry a rope in, and have to throw it at an opening to climb up. She could then unhook the rope to what she was climbing and use it again. The difficulty would be in throwing the rope and have it catch on something above so she could climb in the first place. There could be equally good reasons for dirt, sand, stone, or clay to be on the floor. If she was carrying a ladder, she could even slide it across a pit and crawl across on it. What would the hot key be to crawl? Control+shift+arrow? smiles Phil
