Hi all,
this is good basic stuff but there are some problems:

I believe braded cored rope can be eye spliced, and probably
spliced end to end although much strength will be lost.

when calculating the necessary strength of a rope you must take
in to account that any sharp bend or splice will probably halve
the working strength of the line.

I almost never see natural ropes used on sail boats at least
around here any more, they're just too short lived. Perhaps if
our idiotic government allowed production of hemp line it would
remain popular.

If whipping braded cored line, you need to stitch through both
brade and core to keep from having the core, which has less
stretch than the brade, move up inside the core and thus give you
a hollow braded line that is much weaker.

A trick to make a bowline knot that is more secure for long term
use under stress is to leave a few inches of extra line free
beyond the knot and tie a half hitch in it where it protrudes
from the bowline. Won't shake loose as readilly as can just the
bowline.

More detail than anybody wants, but not even started.

I've read many attempts at text discriptions of how to tie knots
and most of them only help if you allready know how.

Only way to learn knots for a bat is to be shown.

Tom
