I have been using the CF bulbs since they been out. Have replace most of the
lights bulbs in the house with them. My electric bill has gone way down. As for
the dinners, they have come out with the CF bulbs you can use dinners on, just
make sure the package states such.

Before you invest a lot of money in switching out all the bulbs in your
house, I would just try one or two out first. I put one in my basement, one
in my laundry room, one in my bathroom, and one in my dining room - they all
burnt out within one year and I do not have voltage spikes in my area. So,
for the price you for these bulbs versus standard bulbs, I don't see
  anything "green" about them.
