What about looking around for some kind of small plastic, or better Styrofoam, 
bucket or cup to slip inside?  Something like the ones you get for ice in 
hotels?  As the plastic ones are mass produced, you should be able to get some 
cheap.  Check with a local hotel or a restaurant supply for a source.

I do think you are on target here though.  I think this would be a lovely gift.
