Thanks Max, that sounds like my problem.
I think I got the unit at IRTI years ago for about $110 or so and may shop

  That sounds to me like a bad transistor. It's a kind of crackling noise, 
  right? Transistors are soldered in and unless you have experience in 
  electronics repair it's a job best left to the professionals. If it's a 
  battery operated portable it may not be worth fixing.
